On-farm pulsed baiting with coumatetralyl paste for the control of rice field rats

A trial for the control of rodents in fields with growing rice crop was carried out to determine the efficacy of coumatetralyl paste (containing 0.0375% a.i.) as bait for use in pulsed baiting method with a consideration of bait container. Pulsed baiting with the coumatetralyl paste using properly constructed containers was found effective in carrying out rodent control program in ricefields with standing crop. All the rodenticide treated plots had significantly lower rat damage compared with the untreated (F value = 3.21, P less 0.05). Moreover, based on the percentages of damaged tillers at harvest, the level of rat control achieved in the pulsed baited plots was comparable with those of the surplus baited or positive check plots. Significant reduction in rat activities based on tracking or feeding census was also noted. Properly constructed bamboo tube containers prevented bait spoilage and inhibited rats from lifting baits away from baiting locations. The GI-sheet-constructed containers also performed well in preventing bait spoilage, but because of larger opening, some rats were able to lift test bait sachets from several baiting points. No non-target animals were found. Few rodent carcasses were recovered along the treated plots, and were identified as Rattus fanezumi Temminck.
