Plant regeneration of sago palm (Metroxylon sagu Rottb.) through callogenesis from immature seeds at different fruit sizes

Sago is a monocot and a suckering palm which produces industrial starch and could be propagated by seeds. However, germination of sago seed is generally poor because of the presence of pericarp and sarcotesta. An alternative technique in the form of tissue culture was developed to revive the sago industry in the Philippines. This study showed that plant regenerated from immature seeds ranging from 0.99-1.99 mm yielded 2.11 shoots per embryo when cultured in semi-solid MS media. The same seed sizes also obtained the highest number of roots per explants when cultured at solid MS media. Callogenesis was sinificantly present in all cultures. When the fruit size was increased to 3.00-3.99 mm, a noticeable increase of embryogenic calli of 0.29 g per culture and 0.57 mm per embryo was observed.
