Effects of different colored nets on strawberries (Fragaria sp.) under hot environment

An experiment was conducted to study the effects of different colored nets on the growth, flowering date, harvesting date, and yield of strawberries (Tioga variety). It was also determined which colored net was the most suitable in growing strawberries under hot environment, and with cold-water (16 deg C-20 deg C) as irrigation.Black, blue and red colored nets (triple-layered) were used as cover to shade the nets from high radiation. The percent transmittances at different wavelengths (400-700 nm) of the nets were evaluated. The B (400-500 nm): R (600-700 nm) ratio of the nets were determined. B:R ration was lowest in red colored net (0.89), while black and blue colored nets have 1.70 and 1.09, respectively. Data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). In terms of growth and development of strawberries, plant height was significantly (P=0.05) affected by the different colored nets. Strawberries grown under the red colored nets had the highest plant height while plants grown under black and blue colored nets have almost the same height. Analyzing the data, this can be related to the different B:R ratio of the plants received. However, numbers of new, good, and damaged leaves were not significantly affected by the different colored nets. Flowering date and harvesting date were also found to be earlier on plants grown under red colored net compared to plants grown under black and blue colored nets. Yield of strawberries was greater under black colored net, however, total fruit weight was greater on plants grown under red colored net compared on plants grown on other colored nets. The results showed that the different colored nets affected the growth, flowering, harvesting date, and yield of strawberries grown under hot environment. Red colored net is the most suitable shading material in growing strawberries.
