The Northern Philippines Root Crops Research and Training Center has been implementing a program that includes evaluating potato clones obtained from the International Potato Center at Lima, Peru. These are being maintained at the NPRCRTC, tissue laboratory for evaluation and conservation process involves several steps that includes observational, preliminary, advanced and multi-locational. A participatory involvement of different experts composed of tissue culture specialist, agronomist, crop protection specialist, postharvest and processing specialist had come up with a late blight resistant and high yielding table and processing type of potato. Potato clones 13.1.1 and 13.8.1 with yields 26.31 t/ha and 25.86 t/ha had significantly outyielded the check varieties Igorota, yield of 21.61 t/ha (processing type), Ganza, with 21.74 t/ha (newly approved variety), and Granola, with 19.40 t/ha (table type/farmers variety). This has been evaluated under different elevations ranging from 1,616 masl up to 2,500 masl for dry and wet season for thirteen trials starting from the preliminary, advanced and multi-locational. The tubers of these two clones are round oval, light yellow flesh with shallow eyes. Dry matter content had ranged from 18 to 21 percent and processing quality was found acceptable, likewise comparable with Igorota. Potato chips of these two clones is crispy, light yellow, no browning and not lardy. General acceptability and chip yield was comparable with Igorota, a processing type check variety. Hence, potato clone 13.1.1 and 13.8.1 named Bengueta Patatas are highly recommended as table and for chip processing. At present the Center is commercializing potato chips using our processing potato varieties. To promote this technology the authors conduct trainings, dispersal of planting materials, publications and active participation during trade fairs.
