Varietal preference and chemical control of green peach aphid Myzus persicae (Sulz.)

Population and chemical control of green peach aphid were studied on peach cultivars viz. Early Grand, Elberta, Swanee and 6-A at Peshawar valley, NWFP. Results showed that minimum population of green peach aphid was recorded on Swanee variety (26.61%) and it has followed by Elberta (29.97%), Early Grand (31.71%) and 6-A (36.01%) respectively. Actara 25 WG (thiamethoxam), Decis-D 2.5 EC (daltamethrin 12.5 + 150 SC dimethoate 300) Steward 150 SC (indoxacarb) caused 100% mortality within 24 hours of post spray time. Confidor 200 SL (imidacloprid) remained effective for about 48 hours. On the basis of overall performance the insecticides tested against M. persicae may be ranked as Actara, Steward, Decis-D and Confidor 200 SL (imidacloprid) in descending order. The parasite of M. persicae recorded of endoparasitism. Regarding the adverse effects of the tested insecticides, decis was proved the least harmful giving maximum adult emergence (84.25%) of the parasite followed by decis-D, which allowed 78.99% emergence. However, overall observations indicated that the tested chemicals were harmful to the parasitic wasp A. matricariae Hal. Therefore, insecticidal sprays are not recommended if parasites are present and/or pest population is not above the economic threshold level.
