The terms and frequency of atmospheric thaws near Olsztyn [Poland] in the years 1952-2002

Material for the study of atmospheric thaws in the Olsztyn surroundings was based on mean daily air temperatures recorded at the standard level in the period 1952/1953 to 2001/2002. Thaws were studied in 2, 5, 10, 20 days long series [Atlas..., 1990] with an average winter daily temperature above 0 deg C for at least 3 days. The lowest number of days with thaws was 2 and the highest was 88 in the studied period of 50 years. Average number of days with thaws was 40. Additionally we found minimum - 1 thaw, maximum 11, while the average number was 5.3 thaws per winter. Forty six percent of thaws lasted 2 days, those lasting 20 days were only 7 percent. Atmospheric thaws were recorded mainly in December and occasionally in January or February
