The aim of presented study was to compare responses of population (Amilo) and heterosis (Espirit) cultivars of winter rye grown for baking purposes to rate and date of nitrogen application. It was found that rye hybrid Espirit grown on good rye soil gave yield by 21 percent higher than population form Amilo. The response of level and date of nitrogen application was the same for studied rye genotypes - significant yield increase was noted to the rate of 120 kg N/ha. Nitrogen at the rates of 60 and 90 kg N/ha when they were spilt into two sub-rates was less effective than application of the whole dose at the growth renewal phase. Grains of hybrid cultivar Espirit shown better uniformity, less energy consumption for milling, lower crude ash content, higher value of flour and better index of milling efficiency
