This volume contains papers presented during the International symposium on the 'Banana Root System: towards a better understanding for its productive management'. The objective of the symposium was to present the state of the art knowledge on the functioning of the Musa root system and its interrelationships with micro-organisms and pests, and to propose ways to improve root health. The publication includes papers on (1) Banana root deterioration, Root system management, Yield response to nematode control, and functional root content); (2) Root anatomy and morphology (Root system anatomy, morphology, assessment methodologies, development, formation, stratification and spatial distribution); (3) Root physiology (physiology of the banana root system, ion absorption and proton extrusion); (4) Soils and root development (Soil physical and chemical properties, stratification, soil acidification, increased aluminum concentrations and Banana root and soil health project); and 5. Pathogen - root system interactions (use of microbial communities, rhizosphere micro-organisms, biological control of nematodes, parasitic nematodes, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) - nematode interactions, secondary metabolites and nematode resistance in banana)
