Urogenital infections of breeding sows

Presence and number of microorganisms in sows urine and their significance for reproductive disorders are given in the paper. Number of examined sows was 91, divided in two groups, 41 with previous data indicated reproductive disorders related to anoestrus, returns to service and abortions, and 50 with regular cycles. Urine samples were taken during first morning urination of each sow and put to media of urispekts (Spektar, Cacak (Serbia)) with Cled-agar for a total number of microorganisms (TM) and McConkey agar for gram-negative microorganisms (GNM), and incubated on 37 deg C during 24 hours. Obtained data show microbial status of urogenital system of breeding sows herd in the moment of examination. Although TM and GNM values in urine samples of two groups of sows had no significant differences, any increase of microbial population, depending to reproductive phase of the cycle, announces existence of inapparent infections or, if infectious pressure is increased, potential problems in the next reproductive cycles. Urogenital infections may have significant influence to reproductive parameters, even in farms with high level hygiene.
