[Effective method to diagnose infectious diseases in chickens]

There have been presented the results of laboratory investigation of yolks of chicken eggs of different quality for antibodies to Newcastle disease (ND) virus, chicken infectious bronchitis (CIB) virus, egg-drop syndrome virus (EDS-76) and infectious avian encephalomyelitis (IAE) virus. Various forms of chicken eggs were studied: normal, oblong, ball-shaped, annulated, sun-like, zephyrian, having uneven shell, brown dark dappled and without shell obtained from the farms with egg drops and increased number of nonstandard eggs observed. Simultaneously with egg yolk extracts in each peculiar case hen blood serum was studied from the same poultry farms. As is found, specific antibodies to CIB, ND, EDS-76 and IAE viruses were detected both in blood sera and egg yolk extracts, their level being in direct relation to the epizootic situation and the vaccine prophylactic route used in this farm. The level of antibodies in yolks of non-standard eggs was much higher than in blood sera obtained from hens from the same poultry yards and greatly differed with regard to the quality of hen eggs. As is shown, the yolks of standard (normal) hen eggs and eggs with little changes in the form and shell color contained antibodies in relatively low homogenous titers within "vaccine" values with no regard to a kind of disease. In the yolk of nonstandard eggs antibodies were detected in high positive titers in cases of CIB and EDS-76, and low – ND and IAE. Maximum high level of antihemagglutinating antibodies against EDS-76 virus was detected in yolks of eggs without shells and in eggs with bleached shell, against CIB virus – in zephyrian and sun-like. It is concluded that the study of yolks of hen eggs of different quality allows to make a diagnose and do a differential diagnosis of chicken diseases rapidly and accurately with regard to the quality of eggs. The proposed improved procedure is easy and recommended in poultry farms with a sudden drop of egg production in laying hens accompanied with deterioration of egg quality.
