Effect of sex and early feed restriction on the performance of broiler chicken

A number of 288 sexed broiler chicks (Ross strain) were used to study the effect of sex (males versus females) on compensatory growth. A completely randomized design with 4 treatments and 4 replicates was used. Restricted chicken were fed daily on 50% of the quantity consumed by the corresponding control sex, for seven days (15-21 days of age ). During feed restriction, the restricted males and females had significantly (P::;O.05) lighter body weight than the control males and females. However, since the first week of realimentation, the restricted chicken exhibited compensatory growth. At the end of the experiment (7 weeks of age), the restricted males group succeeded in catching-up with the control females group. Both feed restricted groups showed significantly (P:::;0.05( better feed conversion ratio, greater carcass weight and dressing percentage, lower abdominal fat pad (AFP) weight and lower mortality rate than the control groups
