Taxonomical Studies of some weeds in the Gezira State with special emphasis on Wad Medani and Abu Haraz Areas
2006
Elkhawad, M.E.
Gezira fall in the semi- desert zone were the vegetation is grassland. Many crops are sown, that effect on the natural vegetation. This study was to investigate the weed flora in Wad Medani and Abu Haraz areas, as a basic for any weed control program, and to update the natural vegetation and influence of cultivation. The study was conducted for one year (2004- 2005). Field surveys and specimens collections were carried out during the periods Aug.- Oct. 2004, Jan.- April and Aug. - Oct 2005 which coincided with weed emergence time. In addiction to agricultural areas some specimens were collected from road side, some house yards and gardens. A total of 90 species belonging to 28 families (25 dicotyledonous and 3 monocotyledonous) were studied. Broad- leaved weeds were the most dominant weeds in the study area, suggesting that the herbicides selected for weed control in Gezira need to be effective against this group, while the narrow-leav ed weeds are found in large numbers and covered large areas compared to the broad¬leaved ones. The most dominant monocotyledons are the Poaceae family, with a large number of genera and species. Suggesting that movement of cattle, using of unclean crop seeds and continuous using of herbicides, cause some change in the weed flora, that by introducing new species or modification of the native one so as to adapt. More studies have to be done on plant taxonomy especially weeds, for their importance, and studying the weed flora of all the Sudan to record the flora change and to protect our national resources, and the use of them in other fields of science, e.g. medicine, cosmetics
