A field study (2002-2006) was conducted in south-western Slovakia to investigate the effect of herbicide control on weed density and diversity in sugar beet after cereal crops. Actual weed infestation was evaluated before herbicide application and 3-4 weeds after T3 application. Chemical weed control was used as follows: T1 and T2 applications - Betanal Expert (a.i. desmedipham), Safari 50 WG (a.i. triflusulfuron-methyl) and Lontrel 300 (a.i. clopyralid); T3 application - Betanal Expert, Safari 50 WG, Lontrel 300 and Gallant Super (haloxyfop-methyl). Before the application of herbicides, heavy infestations of Persicaria spp., Chenopodium spp. and Echinochloa crus-galli, and medium infestation of the perennial weed Cirsium arvense and late spring annual weed Atriplex spp. were noted. The year had insignificant influence on the variability of weed species. Herbicide treatments and weed species were the most important factors in determining weed density. They accounted for 35.57% and 30.16% of the variance in weed density, respectedly.
