The variation of serum thyroid (triiodothyronine - T3, thyroxin - T4) and steroid (testosterone, estradiol, progesterone) hormone levels was examined in Lipizzan horses of both sexes and various age groups. Serum T3, T4, testosterone and estradiol concentrations were measured by radioimmunoassays (RIA) and serum progesterone concentrations by enzyme immunoassay (EIA). The mean T3 and T4 levels in Lipizzans were in the normal range for warm-blooded horses, but age, sex and pregnancy-dependent variations were observed for both hormones. Testosterone concentrations increased with age in stallions. Changes in progesterone and estradiol concentrations were found in fillies and pregnant and barren mares, indicating the onset of puberty, cyclic ovarian activity and pregnancy.
