A gingival enlargement that is removed by conventional gingivectomy creates an extensive gingival wound, which heals by secondary intent. In this study the healing effects of different periodontal dressings: soft and non-soluble (Barricaid), and soft and soluble (Reso-Pac) on the gingival wounds of 12 beagle dogs were observed. After preparing the dogs' wound test-sites, the wounds of 4 dogs were covered with Barricaid. Four other animals were treated with Reso-Pac, while the remaining 4 dogs received no post-operative treatment. Biopsies were taken from the wounds for the first seven days after the procedures. The evaluations of the epithelization, inflammation and condition of connective tissue were performed on step-serial sections. In addition, the endothelial cells were immunohistochemically stained with CD31 antibodies to determine vascularity. Four days after the experimental injuries, the epithelization of the wounds treated with Reso-Pac was slightly better in comparison with that of the wounds treated with Barricaid or with the untreated controls. Seven days after the injuries, the wounds of all three experimental groups were covered by non-keratinized epitheliums and rete pegs were developing. The morphometrical analyses of vascularity showed that on the first post-operative day the greatest number of vessels/mm2 was in the wounds treated with Reso-Pac (p0.01), although this had reduced by the third day as it did in the untreated wounds.
