Scientific and research activities of ecologists and forests as a basic tool for protected area management - on the example of Polana Biosphere reserve

Scientific and research activities in protected areas offer plenty of valuable pieces of knowledge which are crucial for the formulation of management principles. These activities also present a basic ground for managers of protected areas. The scientific research has been carried out in the Landscape Protected Area - Biosphere Reserve Polana since the thirties of the 20th century. The main focus is given to research on ingenuous mountain forest ecosystems, rational land use with a focus on its stability. In the mountain areas, there is an attempt to assess the level of burden on landscape types by human activity. Implemented projects are oriented at use of permanent grasslands and regional development trends. The scientific research is carried out by universities, the Slovak Academy of Sciences, research institutions and implemented by the management of protected landscape areas.
