How the Dutch government policies enhances competitiveness of the agri-food sector

For many decades, the Dutch government policies aimed at increasing efficiency of agricultural production in order to strengthen the sectors competitiveness. Main policy instruments focused on structure improvements and access to inputs. The public funded technology and innovation system was primarily directed at productivity growth and cost reduction. This changed in the late 1980 s/early 1990s, when saturated food markets and increased vertical coordination between partners in the chain led the government to redefine its role with respect to agricultural development. The Dutch government policies are now much more focused on facilitating sector investments in quality and new market perspective. An important instrument is the Agri-chain Competence Centre that stimulates public-private partnerships between the agribusiness, research institutes and public organizations.
