In countries of the European Union the beer consumption is very popular and it belongs to the best selling alcoholic beverages. Besides the taste and qualitative indicators consumers are looking for local beer brands with labels on bottles and cans. The young generation prefers new sorts of beer produced in the small breweries which use traditional raw materials and brew up beer through the classical way. The reducing of bitterness, the energy value and carbohydrates in beer and the adding of fruit ingredients should attract women to the beer consumption. On the present, the consolidation of production and the distributive sphere is in the progress in the European brewing industry. It is characterized by aggressive merges of breweries and large distributors. The beer sale in the Slovak Republic approximately reached a fifth of the beer sale of the Czech Republic. As to the historic aspect, the Czech Republic has the more significant traditions in the beer consumption in comparison with the Slovak Republic. It is ranked among top ten brewing industries in the European Union. However, we reach only a half of the Czech beer consumption. In the last year, the Czech Republic was the second within the EU-25. The aim of the contribution is to define trends in the brewing industry and beer consumption in the EU member countries.
