A possibility to develop measurement of temperament in a Hungarian Simmental herd

Ethology and animal welfare both play big role in animal breeding. Temperament has close contact with housing, breeding, and production of domestic animals. Authors aim was to develop the method of scale test for measuring temperament of cattle. Two persons (A and B) assessed temperament independently, on a 1-5 scores scale, in 30 Hungarian Simmental heifer calves (age: 121.97+/-17.36 days, live weight: 125.43+/-16.87 kg) during weighing, in the 10th, 30th and 50th seconds spent on the weigh scale. Mean values for temperament scores given by the two scorers were 1.17+/-0.38 for A, and 1.07+/-0.25 for B in the 10th sec, 1.10+/-0.31 for A and 1.13+/-0.35 for B in the 30th sec, 1.20+/-0.48 for A and 1.08+/-0.23 for B in the 50th sec. Mann-Whitney test did not reveal significant difference between results of two scorers, in either of 3 occasions (10th sec: U=405.0, P less than 0.10; 30th sec: U=435.0, P less than 0.10; 50th sec: U=427.0, P less than 0.10). Rank correlation coefficients between scores of two persons were close and positive in the 30th and 50th second (rrank30=0.85, P less than 0.001 and rrank50=0.89, P less than 0.001), but showed just medium correlation at the 10th second (rrang10=0.60, P less than 0.001). Kruskal-Wallis test did not reveal any statistical difference between temperament scores given by A or B scorer either in the 10th, 30th or 50th second. Based on these results, authors suggest that scorers have to attend consultative scorings regularly. Further experiments have to be carried out to determine the most suitable date for evaluating temperament.
