The role of information and communication technologies in regional development

Regional policy is the means by which governments and international organizations seek to reduce spatial disparities in economic well-being. It sets the framework for regional planning. Although instruments of traditional regional policy usually cover macroeconomic and microeconomic tools, today's changes in society lead to the question how information and communication technologies (ICT) can be useful in regional policy. The aim of this paper is to find an answer to suggested question. Proposed tools are divided into 6 categories: attraction of firms producing hardware and software, regional ICT infrastructure, communication and data processing, web presentation, education and business. Each way is described separately with examples.
