Over 2001-2003, in springtime, soil samples were taken from probes dug on 4 localities (Svatoplukovo, Drazovce, Sladkovicovo, Voderady) of Haplic Chernozem for the purposes of determining chosen chemical and biological properties of a whole soil profile. The soil had weak alkaline to alkaline pH (pHH2O=7.6-8.3). The content of carbon and nitrogen organic substances was significantly influenced by locality. In the plough layer their contents ranged from 1.32 to 2.13% Cox and 0.171 to 0.247% Nt. The proportion of Chwe in Cox was 2.3-2.5%, with no difference between localities. There were only sporadic significant differences in parameters of the biological properties between localities. It was the case of FDA hydrolysis (P less than 0.01), anaerobic NH4-N production (P less than 0.05) and a Cmic/Cox ratio (P less than 0.05). In the plough layer an amount of Cmic ranged from 212.2 to 328.7 mg Cper kg d.m., and Cmic/Cox ratio was 1.0-1.97, average DHA was 12.1 micro g TPF.g/h and values of FDA hydrolysis varied from 0.093 to 0.292 delta A/g/h. Phosphatase activity values were low and in the most active layer (0.0-0.3 m) they made 9.04 micro g PNF/g/h Cellulose decomposition was intensive, with the mean value of 47.3%. Microorganisms taking part in nitrogen changes were active in the same layer where an amount of inorganic nitrogen produced on aerobic incubation and anaerobic incubation was 8.66 mg and 25.5 NH+4-N mg, respectively, and nitrification intensity was 9.6 NO-3-N mg per kg d.m. With the exception of pH, values of the tested chemical and biological properties decreased significantly with a depth of soil profile.
