Economic rentability of innovation of sheep milking for the year 2003 has been evaluated by the authors in this work. Used material has been gained from 8 enterprises rearing about 6000 ewes. Four enterprises were using milking machine, while hand milking was being practised in the rest. Production units have been evaluated from production and organization points of view by the authors. Milking effect has been evaluated through sheep productivity (amount of milked milk per ewe per year) and through labour productivity (number of milked ewes per worker). After comparing machine milking with hand milking, savings of working expenses have been calculated (including social cost), considering operating expenses of milking box. As follows, productivity coefficient and profitability of expenses for milking box were calculated. In breeding milked by machine there were 89 litres of milk gained from 1 ewe and 1 worker had to deal with 205 ewes. In handy milked herds there were 82 litres of milk and 1 worker had to deal with 109 ewes. The structure of capital in sheep husbandry has been improved due to introduction of milking machine. The share of active part, having higher influence on labour productivity, has increased on an average by 14.6%. On an average, herds using milking machines have achieved the profit amounting to 0.61 Sk per litre of milked milk from milking efficiency point of view. The value of efficiency coefficient was 2.8% and it took 6.5 years in order to achieve equilibrium point in terms of expenses return. However, there were also few herds showing negative results. These might have been caused either by improper usage of milking machine (which was measured by amount of milked milk per milking box) or by unfavourable ratio of savings of milking box operating expenses (again calculated per milking box). After elimination of these reasons causing negative result there is an assumption of increase in efficiency of sheep milking by machines.
