The potential of biotechnology to improve the agronomic as well as qualitative traits of agricultural crops has long bee recognized. The viability of transgenic approaches in crop improving is exemplified in the every year double-digit increases of total acreages of so called GM or biotech crops. Recently, the second generations of transgenic crops with improved output traits have been commercialized, such as the LY038 high-lysine corn, for example. Because plants are the primary sources of dietary protein, much research effort is concentrated on the improvement of essential acid composition of agricultural crops. Additionally, different breeding biotechnological approaches have been developed. Among them the metabolic engineering of essential amino acid metabolic pathway and the expression of natural essential amino acid-rich proteins in transgenic plants are the most used. Novel approaches, such as protein engineering, de novo protein design and accelerated evolution provide much promise into the future.
