F2-F6 peanut line selection for bud necrosis disease resistance

Objective of this study was to select promising lines that were more resistant to bud necrosis disease than recommended varieties. Fourty-eight crosses of F2 generation were grown in comparison with susceptible and the resistant checks, Khon Kaen 60-2 and ICGV 86388. The studies were conducted at two locations during different seasons between December 1998 to June 2001, at Hauy Laung. Udon Thani, where an evident of heavy disease spread was found in dry season, and at Khon Kaen Field Crops Research Center in rainy season. Selections of segregating progenies by modified single seed descent were continued from F3 to F6 generation. The result showed that the highest bud necroses disease percentage occurred within 35 days from germination (57.5 percent) and the correlations (r) between bud necrosis disease infection and pods/hill and pod dry weight were-0.517,-0.395 respectively at 0-35 days after germination, and-0.287,-0.169 at 36-50 days after germination. Therefore the suitable duration for selection of bud necrosis disease was 35 days after germination. (45 days after planting). The 22 selected lines showed ranges of pod dry weights from 19.2 to 45.5 g/hill, seed weights from 14.1 to 33.0 g/hill, pod numbers from 20 to 51 pods/hill, 100 seed weights from 37.4 to 55.8 g, shelling percentages from 60.8 to 75.1, harvesting days from 101 to 120 and bud necrosis disease infection percentages from 4.3 to 30.9. While the check varieties showed 18.5-31.9 g/hill pod dry weights, 12.6-22.1 g/hill seed weights, 19-32 pods/hill number, 35.5-55.8 g 100 seed weights, 56.6-69.6 percent shelling, 104-116 day harvesting and 24.7-64.5 percent bud necrosis disease infection, respectively. The promising lines will be further evaluated in preliminary trials.
