Feeding behavior of Amblyseius largoensis (Muma) and Phytoseiulus macropilis (Banks) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) on Panonychus citri (McGregor) (Acari: Tetranychidae) | Conducta alimentaria de Amblyseius largoensis (Muma) y Phytoseiulus macropilis (Banks) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) sobre Panonychus citri (McGregor) (Acari: Tetranychidae)

Английский. Feeding behavior of Amblyseius largoensis (Muma) and Phytoseiulus macropilis (Banks) on Panonychus citri (McGregor) was determined on excised grapefruit leaves (Citrus paradisi Macf var. Marsh) infested with all the prey stages.The studies were carried out under laboratory conditions at 22 ± 2,3 °C and 78 ± 5,7% RH. Gravid females of the two predatory species were previously kept in starvation for 24 hr. in hermetic plastic boxes. The starving females were then placed in experimental arena: grapefruit leaves infested with all the stages of P. citri, placed on water-satured cotton layer in 9 cm Petri dishes. The leaves were surrounded with wet cotton. The activity of the two phytoseiid species was observed continuously under a dissecting microscope for 30 min. During this time, the number of prey contacted and killed, and the time the predators spent feeding were recorded. The number of prey killed was 3,55 and 2,45, the percentage of successful attacks, 10,24 % and 15,26 %, and the mean time spent feeding on each prey was 2,33 and 5,09 minutes for females of A. largoensis and P. macropilis respectively. A. largoensis fed on all the stages of the prey except eggs, and P. macropilis, on all stages, except females. Most of the time was spent by both species in active components (walking and feeding). Results showed that P. citri was a suitable prey for A. largoensis and P. macropilis and that their different prey stage preference, might complement each other increasing their potential impact on P. citri on citrus in the field.

Se determinó la conducta alimentaria de Amblyseius largoensis (Muma) y Phytoseiulus macropilis (Banks) sobre Panonychus citri (McGregor) en secciones de hojas de toronjo (Citrus paradisi Macf var. Marsh) infestadas con todas las fases de la presa. El experimento se desarrolló en condiciones de laboratorio a 22 ± 2,3 °C de temperatura y 78 ± 5,7 % humedad relativa. Se seleccionaron hembras grávidas de la cría y se colocaron en ayuno durante 24 horas, transcurrido ese período, estas fueron puestas sobre las unidades experimentales, conformadas por secciones de hojas de toronjo infestadas con todas las fases de P. citri, colocadas sobre algodón humedecido en placas Petri. La actividad de las dos especies de fitoseidos (número de presas contactadas y consumidas y la duración de la alimentación sobre cada fase de la presa) se observó de forma continua en un estereomicroscopio durante 30 minutos. El número de presas consumidas fue de 3,55 y 2,45, el porcentaje de ataque exitoso, 10,24 % y 15,26 % y la duración media de la alimentación sobre cada presa fue de 2,33 y 5,09 minutos, para las hembras de A. largoensis y P. macropilis, respectivamente. A. largoensis se alimenta de todas las fases de la presa, excepto sobre el huevo; mientras que P. macropilis no consumió hembras. Ambos depredadores dedican la mayor parte del tiempo a la búsqueda y consumo de presas. Los resultados demuestran que los hábitos alimentarios de estos fitoseidos se complementan, lo cual avala la posible utilización combinada para el control de P. citri.
