Drinking water samples were collected in milk storage rooms of 30 Czech dairy farms (organic or conventional farming, farms in less favoured areas, different altitudes) in order to evaluate water quality (pH, hardness, conductivity, chemical oxygen demand, colour, turbidity, concentrations of Ca, Cl, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, K, Pb, Zn, ammonium, nitrites, nitrates and sulphates, counts of colonies growing at 22 deg C and 36 deg C, counts of Escherichia coli, coliform bacteria and enterococci). There were significant differences in most variables studied. The major problem encountered was biological contamination resulting in high bacterial counts which in some cases exceeded the hygienic limit values. The type of farming as well as altitude significantly influenced some of the water quality indicators.
