Simulation models were used to forecast growth rates of Sitophilus oryzae, Sitophilus granarius and Rhizopertha dominica in a wheat storage silo. The necessity of fumigation with phosphorus hydrogen preparations was evaluated on the basis of expected grain losses under well defined storage conditions. Simulation models at temperatures of 21, 24, 27, and 30 deg C were used. The products of time and temperature should be calculated at different temperatures and compared according to the simulation results and forecast temperature values during grain storage in a particular granary. Action thresholds were determined according to the models at which fumigation should be carried out without losses or grain quality deterioration. The results were also confirmed by experiments with freshly harvested wheat stored in a flat storehouse and a metal silo. Grain fumigation can be avoided if grain is stored in flat storehouses and cooled down by ventilation.
