Effects of two pre-emergence herbicides viz., prometryn and trietazine/simazine, along with unweeded and hand-weeded controls, on weeds and nodulation, nitrogenase activity, growth and yield of pea (Pisum sativum L.) were studied under field conditions. Trietazine/simazine was applied @ 1.38, 2.76 and 5.52 kg/ha, whereas prometryn was sprayed @ 1.70, 3.40 and 6.80 kg/ha, respectively. Both the herbicides controlled weeds effectively, especially at higher rates of application. The herbicides decreased number and. dry weight of nodules and nitrogenase activity. At higher rates, herbicides decreased seed yield of pea. The adverse effects of herbicides on number of nodules, nodule dry weight, nitrogenase activity and seed yield might be due to their adverse effects on plant growth as both the herbicides are known to adversely affect photosynthesis in plants.
