Effect of potassium and magnesium on yield, their uptake and quality characteristics of wheat (Triticum aestivum)

Field experiments conducted during rabi season of 1998-99 and 1999-2000 on a Typic Ustochrept at the C.S. Azad University of Agriculture and Technology, Kanpur with wheat variety HD-2285 showed significant response to potassium and magnesium application. Grain and straw yields increased with increasing doses of potassium i.e. 80 kg KP/ha. However, the yields at 40 and 80 kg were statistically at par. On the other hand, grain and straw yields increased up to 30 kg Mg ha-I, and, thereafter declined at 45 kg level. The optimum doses of Karia Mg varied from 62 to 70 kg K20/ha, and 32 to 34 kg Mg/ha for 40 to 41 and 39 to 40 q/ha maximum economic yield (MEY) of grain, respectively. The content and uptake of K and Mg was enhanced by their respective additions. On the other hand, K and Mg showed antagonistic effect on their absorption. Protein, lysine and starch contents in grain increased on addition of K. However, Mg addition had positive effect on protein and starch content but negative on lysine content.
