Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is a strategic crop for Iran. Zinc is one of the most important nutrients in improving the wheat yield and quality. about 50% of the world grain producing areas contains low levels of available Zn this percentage is even higher in areas with calcareous soils. Where, over use of P- fertilizers has resulted even low levels of Zn in wheat grain and human diets. Zinc- fortified wheat seeds resulted in better vegetative growth than the seeds poor in Zinc. A field and greenhouse experiment was carried out during 2003-2006 in Karaj Soil and Water Research station to study the effect of Znic-fortified seed on grain yield, tiller number and seed use reduction of wheat. The experimental design was factorial of different seeds (normal and Zinc fortified) and five rates of seed (80, 110, 140, 170 and 200 kg/ha in the field) and (3, 6, 12 and 15 seed per pot) in eight replicates. The results of field experiment showed that the grain yield of fortified seed was higher compared with normal seed. Using 170 kg/ha of fortified seed produced higher green yield (7.18 ton/ha). The result of green house experiment showed seed fortification with Zinc significantly increased the tiller number and improved the grain yield. The tiller number per pot amounted to 24 for the normal seed and 27 for the fortified seed meaning % 1.25 increase due to fortification. The grain weight in the pot with fortified seed was 6.1 gr/pot while it was 5.9 gr/pot with normal seed. Therefore it became evident that the fortified seeds, especially grown in non- fertile soils, play an important role on increasing the tiller number, wheat grain yield and seed use reduction.
