Determining the critical temperatures of early-spring chilling injury, sometimes causing serious damages in yield, helps to apply the suitable and on-time methods to inhibit or diminish the injury. Therefore, a research project was performed in Buin-zahra (Qazvin) area in 2002-2003. Layout was factorial based on a complete randomized design (CRD) with three factors, two cultivars (Qazvini and Ohedi), 5 thermal levels (+2, 0, -2, -4 and –6 oC) and three developmental stages (bud, blooming bud and flowers). Samples were put in a freezing chamber (low-temperature incubator) in which temperature was decreased with a rate of 2oC per hour. At each thermal level, some samples were taken out and injury was studied. Critical temperature of tissue color change was determined as -4oC at bud stage, -2 at blooming bud and +2 at flower. Decreasing temperature down to two more degrees (e.g. –6 at bud) could shift the damage into the irreversible and serious browning injury. Two cultivars did not show any significant differences as the point of critical temperatures and related injuries at each stage.
