Selection and Selfing of Drought Tolerance S1 Maize Lines to Produce S3 Lines and Topcross

The design were conducted at Safiabad Agriculture Research Center (SARC)for three years during 2004-2006. In the first year, 190 S1 maize lines planted under stress condition. Before flowering, early evaluation were done to reject some of undesirable genotypes. At flowering time, the best plant with good characteristics within selected rows, were salfed. At harvesting time, based on good characteristics for plants and ears, 100 ears as S2 lines were selected. In the second year 100 selected S2 lines planted under stress condition and produce 66 S3 lines like the first year manner. In the third year 66 S3 lines planted under stress condition for evaluation and selection the bests. At harvesting time, based on good characteristics for plants such as ( least drooping of plants, least leaf and tassel firing, least pests infection, good plant and ear height and other positive characteristics) and good characteristics for ears such as ( length of ear, diameter of ear, number of rows per ear, number of kernels per row, depth of kernels on ear and percentage of kernels fertilization) 40 S3 lines were selected.
