Improving the nutritive value of Glycyrrhiza glabra L.root pulp by urea treatment and assessing its effects on fattening of male lamb

This Experiment was carried out to determine the nutritive value of untreated and urea-treated Glycyrrhiza glabra L. root pulp (GLP). GLP was collected from three Glycyrrhiza factories and sampled for chemical composition, then it was divided into two parts, when one part was treated with %4 urea and the other part was sundried. Both of treated and untreated GLP were tested for in vivo digestibility and in sacco degradability. In a completely randomized experiment, urea treated GLP was included in amount of 0, 20, 40 and 60% of roughage portion of fattening lambs (n= 4*12= 48) ration. All diets (iso-nitrogenous and iso-energetic) were prepared in pellet form and fed to 12 Turky Ghashghaii ram lambs for 90 days period. Then the lambs were slaughtered for carcass analyses. Results showed that CP, NDF, ADF and ADL were 7.6, 67.7, 58.6 and 30.8 in untreated but 15.2, 62.4, 51.9 and 22.4 percent in urea treated GLP that were significantly (P0.05) lower in urea treated GLP. In vivo DMD and DCP were 34.5 and 28.939.6 and 61.8 percent for untreated and urea treated GLP that were significantly (P0.05) increased due to treatment, such a results were observed for the DM and CP degradibility. Including of urea treated GLP in the diet had significantly (P0.05) affected the final live weight, average daily gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio and carcass dressing percentage of lambs. Lower daily gain and higher feed conversion ratio was observed when the animals received 60% treated GLP diet. Daily gain was 202, 169, 170 and 112 gram and feed conversion ratio was 7.8, 8.2, 9.6 and 11.4 for the rations 1,2,3 and 4 respectively. The cost per kg of DM was 1427, 1261, 1096 and 937 Rials for the rations 1,2,3 and 4 respectively (based on the 2002 prices) but the total feed cost per kg of carcass weight gain was 11131, 10340, 10522 and 10682 Rials for the diets 1 to 4 respectively. Regarding the present costs and according to feedlot performance and carcass characteristics, inclusion of GLP may be used in amount of 40% of the roughage portion in fattening lambs.
