'Ni23' is a new sugarcane cultivar developed at Kagoshima agricultural experiment station Tokunoshima branch. 'Ni23' had been evaluated as 'KY96T-537' in adaptability tests since 2000, and field performance tests at Amami islands since 2002. This cultivar was encouraged to cultivate in Amami islands from 2006. 'Ni23' spread by changing from 'F177', unstable growth and yield on ratoon cropping. Therefore, agronomic characters were researched. Results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. 'Ni23' is good germination of early stage growth in comparison with other cultivars. 2. 'Ni23' is high yield and high sucrose content variety compared with 'F177' on the spring, summer cropping and ratooning type of cultivation. 3. 'Ni23' has comparatively strong drought tolerance in comparison with other cultivars.
