Kobayashi, K.(Niigata-ken. Agricultural Research Inst., Nagaoka (Japan))
In 1989, Niigata Prefecture started to breed new rice cultivars with unique grain characteristics such as aromatic, giant-embryo, colored pericarp and lower content of amylose, and a total of 9 kinds of paddy rice cultivars have been raised in 2000. These new cultivars seemed to be useful for the extension of rice consumption to the new marketing targets including young generation, for the various needs of consumers, and also for activation of agriculture in hilly and mountainous area. Until 2007, the seeds of these new rice cultivars were distributed to more than 640 of rice farmers or rice product organizations. However, it was cleared from the hearing investigation that the cases of failing or giving up in the middle for cultivation of new cultivars were found in the overwhelming majority. Thus, the present study was planned to make clear the factors resulting poor extension of new cultivars and then to get a clue for taking root of the material in hilly and mountainous area.
