This study was carried out to evaluate the prevalence and amount of Helicobacter spp. in the gastric mucosa of domestic dogs (Canis familiaris). Mucosal samples were taken from several places of the cardiac, fundic and pyloric gland region of the stomach to detect helicobacters with the light histological examination. Eighteen dogs of seventeen sampled animals showed presence of Helicobacter spp. Compared to the gastric regions, this study showed significantly higher prevalence of Helicobacter spp. in the cardiac and fundic gland region than in the less affected pyloric gland region. Helicobacter spp. was detected at the superficial epithelium, gastric pits and deeper glandular epithelium of the gastric mucosa. The amount of Helicobacter spp. was relatively differentiated into four groups: as absent, mild, moderate and severe quantity of Helicobacter spp. The occurrence of Helicobacter spp. in the cardiac and fundic gland region showed a mild and moderate amount of Helicobacter spp. at the superficial epithelium and the gastric pits of the gastric mucosa. Helicobacter spp. is localized deeper in the gastric pits and deeper glandular epithelium of the pyloric gland region than in the epithelium of the cardiac and fundic gland region. The amount of helicobacter in the gastric mucosa of the deeper glandular epithelium was more pronounced in the pyloric gland region than in the cardiac and fundic gland region.
