The ostrich farming in Europe is a new branch of poultry farming that is developing intensively due to rapidly increasing demand for products of animal origin with a low fat and cholesterol content. However, there are comparatively few data on the morphology of the digestive apparatus, in particular its development in ontogenesis. The aim of the investigation was to find out the main morpho- and massometrical parameters of the yolk sac and the stomach of the African ostrich, as well as their correlation from the hatching to one month of age. Thirty clinical healthy ostrich chickens of both sexes were investigated. They were divided into five groups - 1 day, 3,7,14 and 30 days old. There is a tendency of decreasing of the chicken body weight during the first week of life. A significant increase (p is less than 0.05) of the body weight of the ostrich chickens is observed starting from the 7th day of age. The yolk sac weight decreases significantly (p is less than 0.05) starting from the 3rd day of life, but its full reduction takes place between the 14th and 30th day of life. The stomach weight and size of the ostrich chickens increase significantly (p is less than 0.05) starting from the 7th day of age; furthermore in the first month of life comparatively more rapid development of the stomach pars glandularis is observed.
