Integration of bionics in housekeeping study courses

In the course of time people ascertained that nature frequently forestalled them when searching for constructive ideas. It became clear that the wildlife is an inexhaustible source of ideas for creating both: new technical and aesthetic solutions. That is the reason why introduction of bionics into the study process of housekeeping fosters the acquisition of the latest technologies and materials by inspiration from nature. The aim of the study is to research the possibilities of integrating bionics into the study courses of housekeeping at the tertiary level. The research was carried out among the 4th year students of Rezekne Higher Education Institution. An anonymous students' survey was conducted in 2007 where 26 respondents participated. The survey results revealed that implementation of integrated tasks of bionics for students allows comprehending the interrelation of specific knowledge and skills as well as things and processes of the environment. A majority of students regard it as a necessity to integrate bionics into the study courses, while a large part of respondents consider that bionics would be necessary as a separate study course; an insignificant number of respondents don’t see the point in courses of bionics at all. In students' opinion the acquisition of bionics within the study courses widens students' knowledge, promotes scientific and creative work, favours acquisition of modern technologies, and enables production of new goods. The revealing and inventive teaching strategies must apply when studying from nature. Novelty of the research – bionics is insufficiently researched and integrated into education in Latvia. The research is based on cognitions of German scientists B. Hill, W. Nachtigal a.o. in bionics.
