Management of rats of the PhilRice experimental farm mostly relied on the judicious use of both chronic and acute rodenticides. For 2002 to 2004 the PhilRice spent about USd 7,000 for the purchase of poison baits and cost of application. However, the effectiveness of bait application and safety of non-target species were offer neglected. At present, management strategies such as 1) field sanitation, 2) dry plowing, 3) establishing trap barrier system plus trap crops, 4)night hunting, 5) rat hunting and burrow management, 6) use of flame thrower, 7) water management, and 8) use of rat traps either individual or in combination are employed against rodents at PhilRice. Management tactics were executed at the proper time based on the rat breeding cycle previously established. This system reduced the use of rodenticides and lowered management cost.
