Effects of soil physical properties on the transport of chloride in an undisturbed soil columns

Transport processes of solute are strongly affected by both soil structure and soil texture. In this study, the relationship between soil properties and solute transport parameters namely pore velocity, dispersion coefficient and dispersivity were quantified. Of the three solute transport parameters, only pore velocity was significantly correlated with soil physical properties. Intersect analysis among the solute transport parameters, however, showed that dispersion coefficient and pore velocity were positively correlated. The derived power law relationship between dispersion coefficient and pore velocity showed that about 54 percent of the total variation of dispersion coefficient is due to pose velocity. Soil dispersivity was found to increase sequentially, moving from coarse to fine textual groups and ranged from less than 20 cm to greater than 67 cm. The results of this study indicates that dispersivity and dispersion coefficient may be poorly predicted from soil physical properties. Nevertheless, the strong relationship between solute pore velocity and soil physical properties may pave the way to the estimation of soil dispersion coefficient as it is also strongly associated with pore velocity. Thus, translating this relationship and complementing it with soil hydraulic properties may be proved useful in developing a pedotransfer function to ultimate solute transport parameters from more readily available soil properties.
