Demonstration of a profitable crop-animal farming system

Growing crops other than corn and integrating it with animal production gives additional income to farmers. Estellena et al. (DA-SMIARC) demonstrated the economic viability of this type of agriculture in farmers' fields involving three farmer-cooperators. Three types of crop-animal farming systems were tested in Cebodela, Laak, Compostela Valley from 2003-2006. These were: corn + banana + goat + pig + native chicken; corn + rambutan + goat + pig + native chicken; and corn + durian + goat + pig + native chicken. Each of the experiments was compared with the farmers' practice of planting alone. Findings of the study revealed the following: among the three systems, corn + banana + goat + pig + native chicken resulted in the highest net income of P66,700 with marginal benefit cost ratio (MBCR) of 1.99 after months of implementation. The other two farming systems had very low MBCR of 0.66 and 0.77. Banana as companion crop of corn produced additional income for two cycle through sales of suckers and banana fruits amounting to P38,150 or 57% of the total net income. Corn gave a net income of P19,950; goat, P3,150; pig P4,250; and native chicken, P1,200. The integration of banana, poultry and livestock is applicable to all types of climate but not recommended in typhoon-belt areas wherein growth and production of bananas is crucial. Seven farmers had adopted this system wherein 3.5 ha were planted to banana and 90 head of animals were raised.
