Nitrogen is usually the limiting nutrient in growing rice hence, it is important that it should be applied properly at the right time and correct amount so as to obtain its yield potential. Eight rice varieties were evaluated during the dry and wet seasons (DS and WS) of 2006 at PhilRice Central Experiment Station in Munoz, Nueva Ecija to assess the grain yield potential in relation to N fertilizer management and agronomic N use efficiency (ANUE). Four N fertilizer levels were used F1- no fertilizer; F2- LCC-based N fertilizer management (35 kg N/ha per application depending on the critical LCC reading),F3- LCC-based N fertilizer management (53 kg, N/ha per application in DS depending on the critical LCC reading and 35 kg N/ha per application in WS depending on the critical LCC reading) and F4- based on yield target, nutrient uptake and recovery efficiency and indigenous nutrient supply (182 kg N/ha in DS and 80 kg N/ha in WS). The P and K rates for F2 and F3 were optimum. For 2006 DS, analysis of variance (ANOVA)for grain yield of different varieties showed that there was interaction between variety and fertilizer level. However, the ANOVA for 2006 WS showed that there was no significant interaction between the variety and the fertilizer level due to the relatively lower irradiance. Except for PSB Rc82 (5.1 t/ha) grain yields of other entries ranged from 6.9 t/ha but generally did not differ in F2, F3,and F4 yields of PSB Rc72H, NSIC Rc116H, NSIC Rc124H and PSB Rc34 increased with fertilizer level up to F4. For BIOSEED, NSIC Rc13H, LPO351 and PSB Rc82, yields increased only up to F3. The highest ANUE of 38 was obtained with LPO351 at F2 with a total rate of 105 kg N/ha. In F4 (182 kg N/ha), ANUEs of most entries declined to 17-25.
