Effect of different land preparation practices on the growth and yield of mechanically transplanted rice

Some farmers already tried less than a week land preparation and has successfully attained the same yield compared to the 21 days long. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of four different land preparation techniques to rice growth and yield. Three treatments were prepared in five days with Effective Microorganisms (EM), non selective herbicide application and one that has no chemical at all. The method using conventionally used 21-days long land preparation posed as control. Data showed that the average number of tillers per hill during transplanting were 7.3 for treatment 1, 6.8 for treatment 2, 5.8 for treatment 3 and 5.5 for treatment 4. However, subsequent monitoring showed that tiller number did not differ from all treatments until all had equalized to 21 tillers per hill. Tiller numbers of treatments at 31, 38, 43 and 52 DAT are not significantly different at the 5 percent level by DMRT. Data showed that initial height of crop after transplanting were 14.8, 13.8, 15.8 and 15.3 cm for T1, T2, T3 and T4, respectively. All treatments proportionally increased in height at 14, 21 and 28 DAT. T3 became the tallest from among treatments at 38 and 45 DAT. However, there was no significant difference during harvesting. The yield of treatment 3 and 1 were 4.1 and 4.82 ton/ha, Treatment 2 and 4 had the highest yield of 5.2 and 5.1 ton/ha, respectively. Data showed that application of nonselective herbicide before 5-days land preparation and a 21-days land preparation could produced higher yield. Productive tillers of the treatments 1, 2, 3, and 4 were 91.6, 91.0, 88.9 and 92.6 percent, respectively. Percent filled grains were 88.9, 92.2, 89.6 and 94.7 percent for T1, T2, T3, and T4, respectively.
