Occurrence, levels, and antioxidative and angiogenic activities of carotenoids phenolics and phytosterols in alugbati (Basella alba L.) and talinum (Talinum triangulare (Jacq) Wild.)

Occurrence, levels and health-related bioactivities of carotenoids, phenolics and phytosterols in leaves and young shoots of alugbati (Basella alba L.) and talinum (Talinum triangulare (Jacq.) Wild.) were investigated. Levels of Lutein (mg/100g FW) were found to be: alugbati 3.45 and talinum 4.37 while the levels of betacarotene in alugbati and talinum were found to be 1.92 and 3.34, respectively. Among the phenolic extracts, the acid hydrolyzed gave the highest total phenolic content (per 100g FW)- Alugbati, 60.2 mg Catechin Equivalent (CE) and 68.9 mg Gallic Acid Equivalent (GAE), talinum, 44.9 mg CE and 55.5 mg GAE. Using RP-HPLC, the levels of beta-sitosterol (mg/100g FW) were found to be 0.13 for alugbati and 1.87 for talinum while the levels of stigmasterol were 2.87 for talinum and 0.71 for alugbati.Campesterol was also detected in both vegetables. The phenolic extracts exhibited the highest antioxidant activity using the DPPH [2,2-diphenyl-l-picrylhydrazyl] and 2-thiobarbirutic acid (TBA) assay. At 500 ppm, alugbati and talinum phenolic extracts exhibited 20-21% free radical scavenging activity, 22-24% and 51% TBARS inhibition in metal catalyzed oxidation of lecithin liposomes and Fenton based oxidation of calf thymus DNA, respectively. All carotenoid, phenolic and phytosterol extracts effected reduction of blood vessels formation in the duck embryo except for beta carotene which was found to be pro-angiogenic. The present study showed that alugbati and talinum contain significant levels of food phytochemicals that have been demonstrated to be beneficial to human health.
