Integrated management of root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita infecting tomato

In three greenhouse experiments, an integrated approach with some organic amendment materials (i.e. green algae, azolla and yeast and / or molasses in buffalo manure extract (BME) and the chemical nematicide, oxamyl was assessed for the management of Meloidogyne incognita root-knot nematode, infecting tomato. The effects of treatments on the growth parameters of tomato were also examined. Root galling of tomato was significantly suppressed by all organic materials tested, with greatest reduction occurring in soil amended with azolla. The nematicidal potential of materials significantly improved the growth of tomato. Moreover, the efficacy of organic material against M. incognita was significantly increased by addition of oxamyl to the soil. The best control of 86.3% reduction in root galling was obtained in yeast in BME with oxamyl followed by azolla + oxamyl (80.5%) and algae + oxamyl (78.2%), used @ 2% organic material + 2 ppm oxamyl. These combined treatments also improved plant growth parameters. Therefore, organic materials applied to soils in combination with oxamyl may provide an effective means for controlling M. incognita.
