A decision support system for the optimization irrigation scheduling

A flexible low-cost and user-friendly measurement and decision support system for irrigation scheduling (DESSIS) using a new technology has been developed and evaluated. The main components of the system are the Minikin measurement, data storage unit, data processing, and communication unit. The testing of a prototype of the Minikin measurement system and evaluation of some water balance models/algorithms were carried out on-site in a two-year field experiment on winter wheat in Iran. The model testing study showed not only, which models are most useful for application in irrigation scheduling in the frame of DESSIS, but also which parameters are critical to be measured for the further design of the measurement system. The results of the field experiments confirmed that daily temperature, air humidity and solar radiation are the most critical meteorological model input parameters to be measured for a representative water balance calculation on this semi-arid site. Precipitation and the amount of irrigation can be estimated and entered manually. Wind can be assessed and does not need to be measured directly for the purpose. The soil water content readings obtained are an important control parameter for simulated water balance parameters. A simple assessment of the economy of the proposed DESSIS system indicates that the cost efficiency of the system may significantly improve because of increasing crop yields, which can be achieved by the optimized irrigation scheduling.
