Altogether 22 different species belonging to 16 genera were collected from various coastal areas near Karachi (Pakistan) during September 1997 - October 1998 and investigated. For this purpose they were extracted in chloroform: methanol, saponified, subjected to column chromatography (CC, TLC), esterified and analyzed for fatty acid (FA) composition initially by gas-liquid-chromatography (GLC) and finally by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The FAs of the class Ceramiophyceae displayed very long RCCL (C7-C32), large FA-diversity (6-24 acids), presence of several SCFAs (C7:0, CT 1, C8:0 and C8:4), VLCFAs up to C32, innumerable PUFAs (C8:4, C9:4, C 10:4, C 16:4, C 18:4, C20:4 and C20:5) and only one substituted FA (sC 15:3); no monoynoic FA and cyclic FAs were present in them. They were characterized by very large quantity (up to 56 %) of C16:0, medium amount (2.7-12.0 %) of C18:1 acids, C18 UFAs up to four DBs, C20 UFAs up to five DBs and C22 UFAs with a single DB (double bond).
