Isolation and identification of different fungi associated with decline disease complex of mango (Mangifera indica L.) tree and bark beetle

Present studies regarding isolation and identification of fungi associated with etiology of mango decline disease complex were conducted during 2005-06. Results of the samples collected from different infected parts of mango trees revealed that the vector bark beetle, Hypocryphalus mangifera and six fungi were involved in etiology of this disease complex. The symptoms included minute black cankers inside the barks with pin head sized bores made on bark by beetle infestation. The cankers increased in size causing decaying of barks and galleries of the vector pest. The wood discoloured, stained brown to black, increased to blockage of xylem and phloem vessels, ultimately causing plant mortality within few months. The six fungi isolated from different parts of mango tree were identified as Ceratocystis fimbriata (50.47%), Fusarium solani (19.77%), Botryodiplodia theobromae (12.85%), Aspergillus niger (10.09%), F. oxysporum (5.54%) and Rhizoctonia solani (1.13%). The maximum frequency of C. fimbriata was the highest in trunk bark and wood (52.43% end 52.87%) collected from Rahooki followed by Tandojam (51.37% and 50.64%) and Khesano Mori (50.59% and 49.95%). F. solani was isolated maximum from roots (19.45=23.35%) and trunk wood (10.13-12.98%). The results further revealed that the four fungi isolated from mango bark beetle were C. fimbriata (40.20%), F. solani (22.42%), B. theobromae (18.80%) and A. niger (18.58%). The maximum frequency of C. fimbriata was the highest in grubs (38.90-42.30%) and living adult beetles (38.87-42.11%) followed by F. solani was the highest in living adult beetles (23.22-26.82%) and grubs (21.33-24.58%).
