Role of extension services in promoting agroforestry in district Bahawalpur

A study was conducted in Technology Transfer Institute (PARC), Ayub Agricultural Research Institute, Faisalabad, Pakistan during 2008. Three rural union councils from tehsil Ahmadpur East, district Bahawalpur were selected randomly from 26 rural union councils. From each union council two villages were selected and from each randomly selected village 20 respondents were further selected making a sample of 120 respondents. The results showed that about 50 percent respondents gave importance to Acacia nilotica and 45 percent respondents to Dalbergia sissoo on farmland to get timber fuel and fodder. All respondents conceded radio and forestry extension wing as highly effective source to meet their information needs. Majority of respondents reported that main problem and constraints hindering adoption of forestry, silviculture and management like pruning, thinning, etc. They also needed guidance about financial or investment marketing, land rehabilitation issues and integrating forestry with existing farming system.
