Hermetic storage: an alternative to low temperature storage to preserve Mestizo 1 hybrid paddy rice seeds
2007
Sabio, G.C. | Dator, J.V.
The effectiveness of hermetic storage (HS) using Volcanic Cubes or GrainPro cocoons in preserving the quality of PSB Rc72H (Mestizo 1) hybrid paddy rice seeds as an alternative to cold room storage (CRS), air-conditioned room storage (ACRS) and conventional storage (CTRL) was assessed. Three piles for HS and one pile each for CRS, ACRS and CTRL were built for sampling and observation. The piles were 2.95 m long x 1.70 m wide x 1.5 m high and contained 200 bags (20 kg per bag) of sun-dried (9.55-10.45% moisture content) one month old mestizo 1 seeds. Piles were sampled at 0, 3, 6 and 9-month intervals to observe changes in germination rate, moisture content, insect density and weight loss. Cost effectiveness of the storage technologies was estimated based on cost of investment and fixed and variable operating expenses during storage. The germination rate of Mestizo 1 palay seeds was preserved for 3 months with no significant differences among storage technologies. The germination rates of seeds in HS, CRS and ACRS were maintained up to 9 months at or above the 85% standard set by the Bureau of Plant Industry. However, seeds stored in CTRL already failed to reach the standard germination rate of 6 months. The most to least effective technology in maintaining germination rate was HS = CRS ACRS CTRL after 6 months, and CRS HS = ACRS CTRL after 9 months. Sequential ranking of most to at least efficient technology in controlling insect infestation and reducing weight loss was HS CRS ACRS CTRL. The order of most to least cost effective storage technology was CTRL HS ACRC CRS for three months, and HS CTRL ACRS CRS for 6 months and longer.
